Winching Down by EarthHart Winching Down by EarthHart
I was in the grounds of the Bishop's Palace, when I heard sirens all over the place, then later saw the Air Ambulance fly over & land on Cathedral Green, so I strolled over to see what the shout was about.

At around 12 noon today, a tourist on the High Places tour in the Cathedral, fell some 30ft & became trapped in a 'void' in a wall. A specialist Doctor abseiled down to her, and stabilized her. Then came the problem of getting her out. The only way was to call in the RAF SAR Sea King helicopter, and winch her off the Main Tower. The lady has no life threatening injuries, and was flown to a hospital in Bristol, where she's being treated for broken wrists & a suspect pelvis fracture. The whole operation took some three hours.

I did a 9 month detachment as a paramedic/winchman, with 22 Squadron, at RAF Valley, back in the late '60s.

Wells is a very small town/Cathedral City, so you're never more than a few minutes away from any action :D
Thanks a lot for the favour, m'deer :huggle::rose:

we saw a similar operation on our last cruise.... a man had a heart attack about 100 miles off NYC so the coast guard came out by heli and airlifted him off the cruise ship...no easy task with the rolling sea and wind..amazing to watch

I hope the guy survived :fingerscrossed:

Back in late '69, I was give a nine month detachment to RAF Valley, as an emergency medic with the SAR Squadron there. They had the new Sea Kings. Most of the time I was on land with the Mountain Rescue team, but once I had to work as a winch-man, and get two folk off of a yacht that had caught fire in the Menai Straights. Just glad it wasn't out in the Irish Sea :phew:
